867-5309 does Jenny own that number?

Or does Verizon? That seems to be the question of the day all over the place. First, there was the ebay auction of 212-867-5309; apparently getting as high as $200,100. Then, Verizon asserted that you don't have ownership rights so you can't transfer the number. Then, Ebay killed the bidding.

I'm surprised John didn't think of a solution. All he had to do was port the land line number to a cell phone and then hand that over to the winnning bidder. For $200k he could pay their cell phone bills for years to come.

You may not be able to own it, but you can trademark it.
