Verisign considers relaunching Sitefinder "service"

David McGuire: "Stratton Sclavos, chief executive of VeriSign Inc., told investors in a conference call last month that the company might relaunch its "Site Finder" service as early as April."

Sep 24, 2003: SiteFinder prompting privacy questions and lawsuits. C-Net is reporting that "VeriSign has settled charges brought by the Federal Trade Commission that the company's Network Solutions unit tricked consumers into registering Internet domain names with its service."

Also, Professor David Farber has called for VeriSign's franchise to be revoked: "I think what they've done is hijacking ... if you let them get away with this, there will be chaos on the Net, with anyone getting away with anything."
