Katie.com domain tussle

It seems that some publisher released a book called Katie.com in 2000 (about girls who get into trouble with the interweb) without confirming that domain name was available, so they are using katieT.com.

Katie.com was registered in 1996 by another Katie. Now either the publisher or KatieT want to do some marketing and promotions for the book and are trying to Reverse Domain Name Hijack from it's original registrant.

In a hypothetical situation with regard to the facts above, it seems to me that neither the publisher nor the author could make a good faith claim to the domain; and their only option is to purchase the domain from the registrant.

[via boingboing -- thanks Paul -- BoingBoing also indicated that the title was originally girl.com, but that domain, unsurprisingly, is being used for a p*** site.]

update: Jeremy Wagstaff reports that Parry Aftab is the lawyer working with Katie the author; but apparently not involved with the publisher.

update: Penguin changes name of book to A Girl's Life Online. However, Jeremy Wagstaff says there's a loose wire yet to be tied up.
