Gmail as spam filter

I gave up on my kevin @ techlawadvisor.com email address today -- I'm getting way too much spam. So what did I do?

I decided to forward all my emails to my gmail account and use that. I then set up filters several on my gmail account to forward certain emails back to techlawadvisor.com.

This process filters out about 99% of the SPAM (so far) and makes my computer more secure from viruses (since I download my email to my computer via outlook express this is a concern). Cool use of gmail I think.

That's great idea. However, this forwarding is most likely to work, at least the current free version, only while Gmail is in beta. Once the service is launched officially (who knows when that would be, anyway) I think the free forwarding will go away (hopefully I am wrong).

From GMAIL: "It's free during the test and you can set it up in seconds. Even set up filters to forward only some of your messages..." (http://www.google.com/gmail/help/whatsnew.html)

I dont trust Google because Google has been infamous for its relationship with Claria Corp (makers of Gator -a spyware). A friend of mine recently encoutered a virus alert while installing their new product Google Desktop.

Also, it is really hard for me to believe a company that continues to provide free services free of charges to its users - except the implicit cost of advertisements. It beats all the laws of economics. Google, itself, probably made a huge investment to start Gmail. It costs even more to maintain such services - all those database and application servers. Where is it getting the resources to maintain and expand its operations?

If I were you, I would stop trusting Google. To me, Google has transformed itself into a million dollar spam lover. You can read more about Google at my blog at http://rafayali.blogspot.com
