Run in with Google Adwords
I thought nothing of my run in with Google Adwords yesterday while creating a new ad campaign to promote this site. I learned this morning however that Google's style and grammar standards is important enough for NYT coverage: Advertisers on Google Are Told to Keep It Proper.
update: My current advertisement was disapproved: "Blawg = Legal Blog" and I was asked to replace it with: "A Blawg is a Legal Blog".
Google's style guide is written by an editorial staff that is in a constant conversation with advertisers who push and pull at the standards. My ad was approved (for now) but only after I submitted an explanation and cited sources.
AdWords submissions are screened by an automated system that flags flagrant violations like multiple exclamation points. Ads that clear this hurdle are posted on the Web, but eventually reviewed by editors.Interesting standard. I guess it's just a matter of time before we learn whether the word I want this site associated with reaches a level of general acceptance.
David Fischer, director for AdWords, said: "We started seeing the word bling pop up periodically. At first it raised some questions, but it's made its way into being acceptable. We measure by the standard of, is this going to be clear to people?"
