The top 10 unintentionally worst company URLs

from blogless Bryan at CWT via email:

Independent Sources: Everyone knows that if you are going to operate a business in today’s world you need a domain name ... the following (legitimate) companies who deal in everyday humdrum products and services but clearly didn’t give their domain names enough consideration:

www.whorepresents.com
www.expertsexchange.com
www.penisland.net
www.therapistfinder.com
www.powergenitalia.com
www.molestationnursery.com
www.ipanywhere.com
www.cummingfirst.com
www.speedofart.com
www.gotahoe.com

go check them out if you're interested in what the real company is about --- unlike the editors at IS, I wouldn't call these companies clueless -- why not consider that they understand the power of humor and viral marketing ... have you seen how many sites out there are linking to these companies' websites....

Whois Privacy versus Disclosure

W$J on whois anonymity:

The decision to reduce information in Whois "shows that Icann isn't under the control of trademark interests and the U.S. government," says Milton Mueller, a Syracuse University professor and privacy advocate who has been following the issue. However, he says, "there's still a danger that the U.S. government will try to circumvent this." He noted that last fall, the Icann names committee proposed establishing a domain name extension -- ".xxx" -- designed for pornographic Web sites, but the U.S. government has persuaded Icann to postpone approving the plan.

Fuck Metallica

As reported on Blawgr: "The famous heavy metal band Metallica is threatening the Swedish steelworkers union Metall, owner of the metallica.st domain"

And via Concurring Opinions: "This Article is as simple and provocative as its title suggests: it explores the legal implications of the word fuck." [Fuck]

Domain Name Drop Market over $10M

WSJ ($) reports that domain name expiration auctions totaled $11.5 million in 2005 (2,291 sales were reported) which is almost triple that from 2004.

In related news, I registered a new domain with Godaddy.com the other day and they informed me that Google is allegedly now looking at whois info related to lenght of registration to aid in determining page rank. Godaddy specifically asked me whether I would like to register the new domain for two years because Google looks unfavorably at one year registrations. Not sure if its a sales technique, gimmick or scam. Anyone out there see anything on this.
