According to a CareerXroads study [pdf] of 40 large companies employing 2.7 million employees in the United States, employee referrals and the internet accounted for 61.3 percent of all external hires in 2004, up from 53.6 percent two years ago. In 2004, employee referrals accounted for 31.7 percent of external hires, up from 26.6 percent in 2002. Employers said 5.5 percent of new hires came from the traditional want-ads in newspapers, up from 4.8 percent in 2002.
