Are unpaid internships to blame for a failing economy

Anya Kamenetz believes that unpaid internships are sending the U.S. economy into the toilet: "...50,000 unpaid interns are employed full time for 12 weeks each summer at an average minimum wage of $5.15 an hour. That's a nearly $124 million yearly contribution to the welfare of corporate America." [Take This Internship and Shove It, May 30 06, NYT]

And this number doesn't include the countless law students who may elect to participate in internships or externships while in law school to get their foot in the door in a prestige industry.

On the other hand, many law students get paid thousands of dollars a week to do absolutely nothing all summer.
