American Lawyer Associate Satisfaction Survey

The American Lawyer Associate Satisfaction Survey was released this week and the results are none too good for BIGLAW firms in Philadelphia. You can find it at AmericanLawyer.com//// Not a single one could manage a ranking over 4 and one firm even found itself plummeting by over a 100 places from 21 to 122 in the overall ranking. The bottom five firms in Philadelphia, which include Wolf, Block / Reed Smith / Montgomery, McCracken / Duane Morris and Fox Rothschild, also find themselves in the bottom third of the rankings. Its really no surprise to this Legal Blawgr to find Reed Smith rounding out the bottom 4, what with its inability to handle the work/life balance issue. If you are desperate for a family law position, however, Fox Rothschild is hiring. Good week and Good luck.

A break between jobs

An easy mistake some golden collars make is not taking a break between jobs which can cause mental exhaustion. Better idea - take the break and enjoy A Life Between Jobs:

Valerie Karasz, 33, had been working as a bankruptcy lawyer in New York for three years when she quit last November. After spending a leisurely holiday with family in Washington and Florida, she went to a wedding in New Zealand, then spent four months traveling in Australia, Southeast Asia and central Europe.

She started a new job at a law firm doing compliance work in the alcoholic beverage industry last Monday.

"I'm excited to go back to work and start in this new industry," she said. "I feel cleansed."

Daddy Tracking Lawyer

"I am an attorney. I made a conscious choice to work in a smaller firm where I make about half of what I could in a big-firm setting. But I don't work crazy hours -- no weekends, gone by six most nights. I don't regret the decision at all." - Brian, 32, St. Louis, father of 4 year old and expecting a baby.
